Motor1 Reviews Team Take:
- The cost of a Volvo extended warranty is typically between $2,500 and $4,500, which is more expensive than many of its competitors.
- Compared to many automakers, Volvo has higher average repair costs and reliability ratings from sources like J.D. Power and RepairPal.
- In our manufacturer extended warranty survey, most Volvo owners were satisfied with their coverage.
- Endurance is our top pick for third-party extended warranty coverage.
If you recently bought a Volvo or are planning to buy one, you may already be familiar with the term “extended warranty.” Volvo’s extended warranty or vehicle service contract (VSC)* provides peace of mind by providing coverage for mechanical breakdowns after the original factory warranty expires.
We understand choosing your Volvo extended warranty provider is not a decision that you take lightly, so we conducted extensive research on both the automaker’s vehicle protection plans and the best extended warranty providers in the industry.
*VSCs are technically not extended warranties, because they do not “extend” the coverage of a car’s original factory warranty. VSCs are often created by separate companies (though offered and sold through dealerships)—and have their own regulations.
However, VSCs serve the same functions as extended warranties and can be considered as such when offered by auto manufacturers. For this article, the terms “vehicle service contract”, “protection plan”, “service plan”, and “extended warranty” are all used interchangeably.
Volvo Extended Warranty
A Volvo Increased Protection (VIP) plan is a customizable service contract that covers unexpected expenses after the standard warranty expires. Volvo offers three levels of coverage—Platinum, Gold, and Powertrain—and depending on the model and mileage of your vehicle, you can get up to an additional 7 years or 150,000 miles of protection.
Since the factory warranty lasts for 4 years/50,000 miles, you can get up to 11 years total of coverage with the Volvo extended warranty. Compared to other providers, Volvo’s plan is one of the longest on the market. Many manufacturer extended warranties last between 8 to 10 years and 100,000 to 150,000 miles.
Volvo Extended Warranty Plans
Here’s a look at the three extended warranty coverage levels Volvo offers, all of which can last up to 11 years or 150,000 miles:
Plan Name | Description of Coverage |
---|---|
Platinum |
Comprehensive coverage of nearly all mechanical vehicle parts, with only a short list of exclusions |
Gold |
Includes everything in Powertrain plan while adding brakes, air conditioning, cooling and electrical systems, and front and rear suspension |
Powertrain |
Covers engine, transmission, drive axle(s), and motor components of hybrid and electric vehicles |
What’s Not Covered by the Volvo Extended Warranty?
The list of exclusions from Volvo extended warranty plans features no real surprises. These are a few of the parts, services, and damage types that aren’t covered by Volvo plans, all of which are common across the industry:
- Routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, multi-point inspections)
- Heater and radiator hoses
- Glass
- Brake pads
- Wiper blades
- Damage from misuse, collision, vandalism, or theft
- Damage from lack of routine maintenance
- Damages from things covered by car insurance, such as accidents, theft, fire, and natural disasters
Volvo Extended Warranty Benefits
All three plans come with additional benefits such as:
- Alternate transportation (up to $40 per day for 10 days per covered repair)
- Towing coverage (up to $100 per occurrence)
- Travel coverage if you’re more than 100 miles from home ($100 per day for up to five days)
- Fluids coverage
- Transferability to a subsequent owner ($40 fee)
Note that Volvo’s plans don’t come with full roadside assistance, just towing. Many other manufacturers offer roadside assistance on their plans.
Volvo Extended Warranty Terms and Conditions
You may choose to buy your Volvo VIP plan when you purchase the car or later. The coverage starts from the date of purchase of contract and is accepted at all authorized Volvo dealers across the U.S. and Canada. Keep in mind you may get a better deal on your Volvo extended warranty price if you purchase sooner, as the car’s mileage and age will be lower.
If you decide to buy the extended Volvo warranty from the dealer at the time of purchase of the new vehicle, you could roll the cost into your auto loan. But this way, you end up paying interest on it, which could make the warranty more expensive than it should be.
Volvo Extended Warranty Maintenance Plans
Include a short description of what maintenance coverage is and intro the plans.
Maintenance Plan Option | Term Length | Coverage Details |
---|---|---|
Prepaid Maintenance |
Up to 10 years/ 100,000 miles |
For model year 2016 and newer, Volvo owners can choose a plan that includes two, three, five, or seven maintenance services. |
Wear Maintenance |
Up to 10 years |
This plan covers wear-and-tear items like wiper blades, brake pads, and rotors. You can choose a term of three, five, seven, or 10 years. |
The Volvo Prepaid Maintenance plan includes roadside assistance that features key fob replacement benefits of up to $450 per incident. You can also transfer the plan to a new owner, potentially boosting resale value.
More Volvo Protection Products
Volvo offers an impressive selection of optional vehicle protection plans. The following sections outline these additional coverage options.
Volvo Total Loss Protection
This is Volvo’s version of guaranteed asset protection, or GAP insurance. The plan provides $50,000 of coverage for your vehicle if it’s declared a total loss. When you make a claim, Volvo Total Loss Protection also pays up to $1,000 toward your insurance deductible.
Volvo Appearance Protection
This covers interior and exterior vehicle elements and comes in two levels: Plus and Ultimate. The Plus plan covers dents and dings while providing rental car coverage up to $50 (one day). At the Ultimate level, you get what’s included in the Plus plan along with protection against windshield damage and interior tears and punctures.
Volvo Protection Plan
This protects your vehicle from road hazards and general wear and tear. These are the four coverage levels available:
- Superior Plus: Comprehensive coverage for your Volvo’s interior and exterior, with windshield replacement benefits included
- Superior:Tire and wheel coverage with cosmetic protection, along with dent and windshield coverage
- Premium: Tire and wheel coverage with cosmetic protection included
- Deluxe: Tire and wheel coverage (covers damage due to road hazards, but no cosmetic protection included)
Volvo Extended Warranty vs. Factory Warranty
With proper maintenance, your Volvo can last a long time. But like any other vehicle, they’re not immune from breakdowns, and the factory warranty only covers you for up to 50,000 miles. A Volvo extended warranty kicks in after the factory warranty has expired to ensure you’re covered when an unexpected, major car repair falls into your lap.
In addition, a transferable Volvo extended service contract could also improve your car value and make your car more appealing to a buyer.
Volvo New Car Warranty
When you purchase a new Volvo vehicle, it typically comes with the following manufacturer warranties:
- Limited Basic Warranty (4 years/50,000 miles): Covers all repairs caused by defects in material or workmanship, including parts and labor, as well as battery and powertrain coverage
- Corrosion Warranty (12 years/unlimited miles): Covers the body sheet metal of your Volvo if it corrodes or rusts through
- Emissions Warranty (2 years/24,000 miles to 8 years/80,000 miles): Covers emissions control parts like the catalytic converter
- Scheduled Maintenance (3 years/36,000 miles): Covers services at the 10,000-mile, 20,000-mile, and 30,000-mile marks
- Adjustments (1 year/12,000 miles): Covers refinements to original factory fittings and alignments
- Roadside Assistance (4 years/unlimited miles): Covers Volvo On Call customer assistance
Volvo Certified Pre-Owned Warranty
You can also buy a Volvo Increased Protection plan for a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle. Volvo CPO vehicles come with a 1-year/unlimited-mile warranty. With an extended protection plan for your Volvo CPO, you’re covered for an additional five years with no mileage limit.

Most major car repairs happen after the car ages, and by this time, the factory warranty has already expired. The cost of an extended car warranty can certainly be worth it. If you don’t want to pay for these expensive repairs out of pocket and would prefer the convenience and confidence of a Volvo extended warranty, read on.
We asked the Director of Marketing at Endurance, Jessica Campbell, about common repairs the company handles. Here’s what she said:
“Transmissions are the most common repair claim, followed by water pumps. Repair costs can vary widely depending on several factors, including vehicle type, model, age, and the complexity of the individual repair.”
Volvo Extended Warranty Vs. Third-Party Extended Warranty
An extended warranty from Volvo can be a good choice, but it’s also smart to consider your third-party options. Vehicle service contracts from independent warranty companies carry their own sets of advantages over extended warranties from manufacturers. The pros and cons tables below highlight this.
Pros of Volvo Extended Warranty
- Repairs performed by Volvo-trained technicians
- Genuine Volvo parts used
- Only three coverage level options
Cons of Volvo Extended Warranty
- Repairs must be performed at Volvo dealers
- Can be on the pricey side
Pros of Third-Party Warranty
- Flexibility in terms of repair shop
- Wide range of coverage options
- Affordable rates
Cons of Third-Party Warranty
- Non-OEM* parts often used
- Mixed customer service reviews with some providers
*Original equipment manufacturer parts
