There are three levels of the Chevrolet Protection Plan coverage to choose from, known as Powertrain, Silver, and Platinum. These levels are comparable to powertrain, mid-level, and exclusionary plans.

Chevy’s extended warranty coverage is a solid choice if you’re looking for a manufacturer-backed plan for your vehicle. However, you may find more flexible coverage terms and cheaper plans through a third-party warranty provider. Chevrolet Extended Warranty Terms and Conditions

Coverage terms for these extended warranties are available for up to 8 years/100,000 miles. However, Chevrolet Protection Plans run in conjunction with the manufacturer warranty on your vehicle instead of starting up where your factory coverage left off. The Chevy factory warranty lasts for 3 years/36,000 miles, for example. After that warranty stops, your Chevrolet Protection Plan would continue for five years until the Chevy officially became eight years old (or had been driven for 100,000 miles).

If you ever plan to sell your car, you can transfer your Chevy extended warranty for a $50 transfer fee. Transfer is only available to a private party and not a dealership. Your coverage plan is also fully refundable within 30 days of purchase. If you decide to cancel your coverage after 30 days, you’ll receive a prorated refund instead of a full refund.

Chevrolet Extended Warranty Maintenance Plans

Chevy offers two levels of prepaid maintenance coverage. Plans are available with the following terms:

• 24 months/3 covered services
• 36 months/6 covered services
• 39 months/6 covered services
• 60 months/10 covered services
• 72 months/12 covered services

The Chevrolet Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Warranty is for vehicles within six model years and with a maximum of 75,000 miles. Before becoming a CPO Chevy, a vehicle must pass a 172-point inspection and undergo a reconditioning process.

Our Manufacturer Extended Warranty Survey

In December 2023, our team surveyed 1,000 drivers with automaker extended warranty coverage. A total of 121 respondents had Chevrolet vehicle service contracts. Here’s how much they reported paying for coverage from the dealership:

• 20 percent reported paying $2,000 to $3,000

What Survey Respondents Said about Chevy Extended Warranties

Most of our survey respondents reported satisfaction with their coverage. A total of 20 percent of respondents said they would purchase the same level of coverage again, while 60 percent of respondents said they would consider other options for coverage.

“When we needed some electrical repairs completed due to parts failure, it was covered by the warranty. They were polite and efficient. The process seemed to take a while, however, they held up to the agreement.”

“We were pretty satisfied. It covered a part on the A/C that broke pretty soon after we bought it, [which] saved us about $1,000. It was a fairly easy process. It covered [a] $1,000 part in full, and we were thankful we chose to add it. However, we tried to submit a claim for a piece that was broken in the sunglasses holder (on the windshield) and they said it wasn’t covered, even though the broken piece is on the inside.”

“I really was disappointed in it. There were too many [loopholes] in it that they used to void it. Like excessive documentation. It was a headache trying to gather and provide all the service documentation they asked for. And in the end they denied the claim because one of the service providers [was] not approved by the company.”

Chevrolet Extended Warranty Vs. Third-Party Warranty

A manufacturer-backed Chevrolet extended warranty isn’t the only way to get extended protection for your Chevy. Independent warranty companies can provide a wider range of plans, more flexible coverage options (including month-to-month contracts), and a larger network of repair centers over manufacturer extended warranties.

However, you need to be okay with receiving repairs with aftermarket parts instead of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, as these aren’t guaranteed with a third-party warranty plan. If getting repairs done with genuine OEM parts by factory-trained technicians is what’s most important to you, you may prefer a Chevrolet-backed protection plan.

About 41 percent of those surveyed bought a bumper-to-bumper vehicle service contract. Nearly a quarter purchased powertrain plans, while about 23 percent went with a mid-level extended warranty.

What was the most important factor when choosing a warranty provider?

Coverage and cost were the two most important factors for our respondents as they compared warranty providers. About 29 percent said variety of coverage options was the key factor, while just under 25 percent said total cost was their main concern.

How much did you pay for your extended warranty?

Of the 609 respondents who pay for their extended warranty on a monthly basis, about 56 percent reported paying between $50 and $100 per month. Of those who paid for their coverage upfront, about 19 percent paid between $1,000 and $1,500 for their plan, while about 51 percent said they paid between $1,500 and $3,500.

How satisfied are you with your extended warranty coverage?

About 66 percent of the 1,000 respondents said they were very satisfied with their warranty coverage. Another 30 percent reported being slightly satisfied. Only 1.1 percent of the customers we surveyed said they were very unsatisfied with their vehicle service contracts.
